Siegfried Marcus skonstruował wtedy pierwszy samochód napędzany benzyną. Nie można być pewnym kto pierwszy skonstruował silnik o spalaniu wewnętrznym. Uznaje się że zrobiło to niemal jednocześnie kilku niemieckich inżynierów, niezależnie od siebie. Karl Benz skonstruował pierwsze auto w 1885 w Mannheim, niedługo później otrzymał patent i w 1888 rozpoczął produkcję. Gottlieb Daimler wraz z Wilhelmem Maybachem w 1889 w Stuttgarcie zaprojektowali pojazd działający na podobnej zasadzie.
