Nad pojazdami napędzanymi parą, myślano już w XVII w. Ksiądz z Flandrii, Ferdinand Verbiest, miał rzekomo w 1678 przedstawić Chińskiemu cesarzowi taki pojazd napędzany parą, jednak nie ma na to żadnych dowodów. Dlatego za pierwszego konstruktora samochodu uznaje się Nicolasa-Josepha Cugnot, który zaprezentował takie auto w 1769. Kolejnym ważnym okresem w historii samochodu, są lata około 1870. Siegfried Marcus skonstruował wtedy pierwszy samochód napędzany benzyną. Nie można być pewnym kto pierwszy skonstruował silnik o spalaniu wewnętrznym. Uznaje się że zrobiło to niemal jednocześnie kilku niemieckich inżynierów, niezależnie od siebie. Karl Benz skonstruował pierwsze auto w 1885 w Mannheim, niedługo później otrzymał patent i w 1888 rozpoczął produkcję. Gottlieb Daimler wraz z Wilhelmem Maybachem w 1889 w Stuttgarcie zaprojektowali pojazd działający na podobnej zasadzie.
